History

In 1805 the “Zum Eisvogel” restaurant emerged as one of the best-known inns of the Prater area of Vienna. Even then the name “Zum Eisvogel” carried a reputation for simple, top- grade cuisine, for a tasteful atmosphere and excellent service, for great hospitality and high quality.

As well as offering great pleasure to the palate, the pub also offered musical enjoyment: its guests included, among others, Philipp Fahrbach, Antonie Mannsfeld, Fanny Hornischer, Alexander Girardi, Josef Jarno and his wife Hansi Niese, as well as the E. Hornischer women’s ensemble. The Prater area of Vienna was already a favourite tourist attraction for confirmation candidates, and the Eisvogel was famous for its delicacies.

In 1945, in the last days of the war, the Eisvogel was destroyed by fire. In 2008, after a break of more than half a century, it re-opened its doors as the Stadtgasthaus Eisvogel, a descendent of its historical role model and the renaissance of a Viennese classic.
